Serving the poorest of the poor in American Cities
Kansas City
Humble Beginnings
March 9th of 2019 was the first Saturday of Lent. A group of us gathered in a Church basement and launched our pilot efforts. We began with the morning Mass at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church. After a small breakfast (same as what the volunteers have everyday in Calcutta with the Missionaries of Charity sisters), a few short stories about Mother Teresa, a quick orientation, some prayers and a song – we split into 4 small groups and went to serve the poor, elderly, and the homeless with different local organizations. Our friends we came to join us from CO and TX left after some nice Kansas City BBQ. It was a beautiful day.
Although we are big fans of OLGC Church and the liturgy there, it was too far from most of our volunteers, so we started exploring other parishes to partner with. With a great desire to serve and without a space to meet for the orientation, we started gathering in the parking lot of Cure of Ars. And then moved to Holy Spirit in Overland Park in 2022. We were able to consistently meet every month all summer long and served with various organizations – Little Sisters of the Poor, St. Mary’s Food Kitchen, Yellow Brick Foundation, Queen of Angels Thrift Store, St. Paul’s Episcopal Community Breakfast, Morning Glory, etc.
We are looking for parishes to partner with, to be able to serve the poorest of the poor locally. Please contact us if you wish to engage more parishioners to do corporal works of mercy more frequently.
